Ingonyama en ander maats met leeueharte is a collection of modern and unpublished (new) short stories for Afrikaans FAL children in Grades 4–6 and is compiled according to the CAPS curriculum requirements. This collection may be used to encourage bumbling readers to able themselves to read with more self-confidence in the Senior Phase.

Each story begins with a suggested discussion topic and a glossary of words from the story’s text with which learners’ vocabulary can be expanded. The reading process, as set out in CAPS, is followed in the compilation. The pre-reading questions allow learners to use their newly-acquired vocabulary when discussing the topic, as well as to prepare themselves for reading the story. The reading process is also facilitated with English translations of difficult words in the footnotes.

Each story includes:

  • a discussion topic and a word list.
  • pre-reading questions.
  • English translations of difficult words in the footnotes.
  • post-reading contextual questions.
  • enrichment activities, e.g. word games, creative writing, transactional writing, etc. which can be utilised as possible assessment.

This anthology considers the dreams, fears and interests of this age group – middle graders in the Intermediate Phase. The image of the youth painted in these stories is that of brave and creative children who are wise and generous of heart. Annelie Ferreira’s story “Ingonyama” (“lion” in isiXhosa and isiZulu) expresses this image so strongly that it was chosen as the anthology’s title, and “leeueharte” (“lion-hearted”) in the title alludes to the phrase “to have a lion’s courage”. The anthology is therefore for all learners who want to read courageously and more fluently in the First Additional Language.
